this win, especially as we have only held this show twice and it's
just the kind of news you want to hear at the end of the

<p>Day one of Fine Food NZ, New Zealand's largest hospitality
industry trade show certainly did much to lift economic confidence
with good numbers turning out to check halls packed with
exhibitors, both from New Zealand and international.</p>

<p>While aromas of products cooking (and people tasting) were
everywhere to be smelt and seen, down in the baking pavilion the
first and second heats of the Weston Milling Trainee of the Year
were taking place. This year a much higher standard was visible
from both the competitors' skills and their finished products. The
audience often talking among themselves about the innovation and
look of the end results such as the green tea lamingtons or the
bacon and egg breakfast Danishes.</p>

<p>Adjacent to the baking competition area, the masters of New
Zealand's bakery scene were going through their own rigorous
testing closely watched by spectators during the live judging of
the Bakery of the Year competition. This year an Olympic Games
theme brought an extra element of colour and creativity to the
baked items from cup cakes of swimming competitors to a decorated
cake stadium with three Kiwis on the podium.</p>

<p>Check out the images below and get along to Fine Food NZ. It is
on until Tuesday 5pm at the ASB Showgrounds in Greenlane,
Auckland.</p>

<p>New Zealand's international trade show for the foodservice,
bakery and retail industries is back - and the biennial event is
proving to be vital for the growth and development of the FMCG and
hospitality sectors.<br />
<br />
 The show is a great way to leverage the New Zealand industry, says
Dona White, CEO of North Port Events (organisers Fine Food New
Zealand in partnership with Diversified Exhibitions,
Australia).<br />
<br />
 "The inaugural Fine Food New Zealand show in 2010 was a resounding
success, exceeding expected visitor numbers by 15% and attracting
excellent feedback from every quarter - including 240 satisfied
domestic and international exhibitors," states White.<br />
<br />
 "The 2012 event promises to be an even better, despite recent
recessionary pressures, not least because the industry sectors that
Fine Food New Zealand serves are generally defying the trends and
showing strong growth."<br />
<br />
 FMCG is New Zealand's largest manufacturing industry, accounting
for 5% of GDP and providing about 63,000 full time jobs. New
Zealand supplies 2.4% of the world trade in processed foods and
exports are growing*.<br />
<br />
 The hospitality industry is also a major player, contributing $6.5
billion to the local economy annually and provides about 100,000
jobs. Steady growth has been noted in foodservice sales over the
past 24 years (1987 - 2010), with average real growth reaching 4.4%
per annum**.<br />
<br />
 Total food retail sales volumes rose 2.2% in the September quarter
last year, the largest quarterly increase since December 2006.
Sales volumes increased in 13 of the 15 retail industries, led by
significant rises in supermarkets, grocery stores and accommodation
sales***.<br />
<br />
 "The significance of these sectors to the New Zealand economy is
not going to diminish any time soon - hence the importance of Fine
Food New Zealand to the Kiwi business community," says White.<br />
<br />
 "Fine Food New Zealand is the trade show these vital industries
deserve. It's where the manufacturers, producers, and distributors
can expand their customer bases, make sales, promote their brands,
launch new products and source new suppliers. There is simply no
better environment for these businesses to engage with their target
markets.<br />
<br />
 "Interest is running high as the show approaches and I would urge
all businesses in these sectors to contact us quickly to snap up
the top sites before they all go."<br />
<br />
 Mike Sander from ANZCO Foods exhibited at Fine Food New Zealand
2010 and believes the show was great value, and effectively opened
doors for his business.<br />
<br />
 "You can spend tens of thousands of dollars travelling around to
meet customers - but with Fine Food New Zealand they all came to
see us. A captive audience for three days, it was well worth our
spend," he says.<br />
<br />
 "We have since developed new business in the Pacific, expanded our
sales, increased awareness for ANZCO Foods in New Zealand and we've
built on our successes in Australia. We thank North Port Events for
teaming up with the Australian organisers to finally bring a
professional, and rewarding trade show to New Zealand that is to
international standard."<br />

<p>Check out the red-hot culinary competition between some of the
world's top chef teams during the New Zealand International
Culinary Challenge. It'll be held at Fine Food New Zealand 2012,
organised by the New Zealand Chefs Association and sponsored by
Fonterra.<br />
<br />
 Teams of chefs under 25 years old from Australia, Singapore, and
New Zealand will go head-to-head on days one and two of the event
to win the Gourmet Pacific Challenge. Then, on day three we bring
out the Big Guns - three teams of senior chefs from Australia,
Singapore, and New Zealand vying to win the Battle of the
Tasman.<br />
<br />
 "These guys are right at the top of their game - they can stand
toe-to-toe with anyone worldwide," says New Zealand Chefs
Association Vice-President Gary Miller.<br />
<br />
 "The Kiwi team has just won six gold medals back-to-back and
they're keen to add another gold to their trophy cabinet. But the
Singapore team are the current world champions so it's bound to be
very close."<br />
<br />
 The senior chefs will have five hours to prepare and cook 70
covers of a four-course meal from scratch, followed by two hours of
service. The results will then be judged by an international panel
of experts from Australia, Singapore, and Hong Kong.<br />
<br />
 Visitors to Fine Food New Zealand can sample the five-star dishes
created by these world-class international competitors at special
prices on every day of the show. On day one individual dishes will
be available for only $10 each, full three-course meals on day two,
and four course meals including a glass of wine will be exceptional
value at $35 each on day three. Tickets for these sessions are
available on a first come, first served basis by calling 0800 692
433.<br />
<br />
 "These competitions provide an excellent opportunity for punters
to see the pointy end of the industry in action - and to showcase
New Zealand food products to an international audience of buyers,"
says Miller.<br />
<br />
 Fine Food New Zealand will be held at the ASB Showgrounds from 17
- 19 June and entry is free by registering online by 10 June 2012.
